Ian was the third of 4 children. He has an older sister Hanna, an older brother Erik, and a younger brother Payden. He had a highly-tuned protective instinct and always stood up for his loved ones and friends. He was a boy scout for many years, and really enjoyed camping, hiking and being in nature with his friends. When he was younger, he had a fascination with Navy SEALS, and thought at one point that he might pursue a career in the military. Ian was a loyal friend to many, and often brought the fun to situations with his goofball personality and friendliness. He was having fun with a group of friends during spring break when he and a good friend Paige Merical were both caught in a rip current in a very stormy sea. Paige was rescued and taken to the hospital, but Ian was not found for 3 days. Paige was put on life support but tragically died April 26. Her parents, John and Suzi Merical, now strive to spread awareness and knowledge of rip currents and how to survive them.
Right after Ian died, a friend of Ian’s, Emilie Boyd, had green bands made with the words “Live for Ian”. Green was Ian’s favorite color. She distributed them to family, friends, and the community. In social media posts about Ian ever since, the hashtag #LiveForIan is often used. Many people also began to use a green heart to honor him as well. To friends and family, Live for Ian, #LiveforIan and a green heart are synonymous with Ian, and a reminder to find the best in others, lift them up, and to strive to make the world a brighter place.
